When co-founder Joseph R. "Rod" Canion sketched out a plan for a portable IBM-compatible PC clone on a napkin in a Houston pie shop, he knew he was onto something big. But he never imagined that he was laying the groundwork for what would become the first start-up company ever to reach more than $100 million in its first year of sales and go on to revolutionize the Personal Computing landscape.
Compaq was founded in February 1982 by Rod Canion, Jim Harris, and Bill Murto, managers from Texas Instruments. Dissatisfied with the status-quo, the bootstrapped entrepreneurs quit their jobs without even knowing what to do.
To fulfill the needs that weren’t being satisfied in the different segments of market, Compaq introduced The Portable in 1982. It became a huge commercial success, selling 53,000 units in its first year of sale and generated a revenue of $111 million. In 1984, Compaq released Deskpro, the Fastest PC in the market at that time.
In 1986, Compaq became the youngest-ever to enter the Fortune 500 and in the year 1987, became the fastest to cross $1 billion revenue mark.
Compaq is an amalgamation of “Compatibility and Quality” ensuring that all its devices stayed true to the idea. Compaq was the first to not bundle application software with its devices, and gave Freedom to its users to customize basis their requirements.
In the year 1993, Compaq launched the Presario series in the retail market. The Presario series instantly became the highest selling PC in the world. Compaq sold more PCs worldwide than any other manufacturer in the first quarter of 1994 thereby becoming the No.1 PC brand worldwide.
In the year 2002, Compaq merged with Hewlett-Packard. The conglomerate became the biggest name in computing industry. Presario All-in-one series was introduced to the world with an in-built webcam, attached speakers and hotkeys on the keyboard. With these added features and attributes, the new Presario series again became the market leader.
With the introduction of All-in-one computers, Compaq became the go-to brand for the Indian consumers. In the early 2000s, Compaq became the Most Trusted Brand in India, and the Presario series became a staple in every household. For majority of people in India Compaq was their first computing device and their first touch point for Internet, and still holds a special place in their memories.
